PALM BEACH MARITIME ACADEMY

From the Principal:

It gives me great pleasure to begin my 17th year as Principal of Palm Beach Maritime Academy, and on behalf of our Governing Board and myself, I wish to extend a warm welcome to all of our teachers, parent, students, and community members.

Palm Beach Maritime Academy and High School is proud to carry full accreditation from AdvancED, formerly known as SACS from grades Kindergarten through 12. This means you can rest assured that your child is receiving a quality education that he or she can take to any institution of higher education in the country!

Since our opening in January of 2000, we believe we have proven our dedication to experiential learning and maritime/marine science experiences while at the same time exceeding the core standards set by the Florida Department of Education.  We are the longest-running successful charter school in Palm Beach County, and our success has been recognized by, among others, both Governor Jeb Bush and Governor Charlie Crist. Many of our current and former teachers have won awards and distinctions throughout their tenure here including Palm Beach County’s “Beginning Teacher of the Year”, NOAA’s “Teacher at Sea Program”, Marinelife’s “Blue Friend of the Year”, a finalist for the Dwyer Award, the Florida Art Educators Association’s “Principal of the Year”, and a group of our teachers were selected to present our program at the Florida Charter Schools’ State Conference in Orlando. Our students, too, are award winners they having placed first and second in the annual Plywood Regatta and Remote Operate Vehicles contests throughout the years. They have gone shark-tagging with the University of Miami (and this year Mayor David Stewart of Lantana will be joining us!), produced an award-winning film on the ocean, taped news videos which appear on our YouTube channel, participated in the Palm Beach and Lantana “Coastal Clean-up” activities, and they achieved many other successes. This year’s field trip plans include MacArthur State Park, Loxatchee River Center, Loggerhead, Marinelife Center, Grassy Waters, and the Everglades. We have a wonderful relationship with the Lantana Police Department; officers have come to the school and met the students at Lantana parks to play a basketball tournament and soccer. There was some serious competition! Our middle and high school students are also scheduled for overnight trips to Marinelab in Key Largo, and our 5th Grader Patrols are already preparing for their annual trip to Washington DC.

We are proud to offer Grades K-12. Our students and parents have become our family, and in our first senior class (the Class of 2016), several students had been with us since elementary school! We are looking forward to our second high school graduation in June, 2018, and the PBMAHS school rings are gorgeous!!!! We plan to continue our long tradition of excellence with the help of our current and new families, our stellar Faculty, and the communities of Lantana and Palm Beach.

We look forward to working with each one of you.

Sincerely,

Marie Turchiaro
