March, 29 Friday Letter

March 29, 2012

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Friends of PBMA,

Thanks to everyone for your participation in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s School and Youth Program.  We have been collecting spare change to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s mission which is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma, and to provide quality of life for patients and their families.  Congratulations on a magnificent effort…we have met and exceeded our goal by collecting $4,107.37! The winning class is Ms. Rosenthal’s 3rd grade, which collected $563.37. Congratulations to Ms. Rosenthal’s class and to the whole school for an outstanding effort. You have helped many people with your generosity.

The last day for tutoring will be April 13, 2012. Students will return to their original transportation methods as indicated by parents at the beginning of the year. If your child takes the bus, please be sure to be at the stop on time. If your child is a car rider, please remember that pick-up is at 3:15pm.

The FCAT Schedule is as follows:

FACT Reading, Math and Science Grades 3-8:

Monday April 16th                           Grade 6 math, Grades 3-5 Reading, Grades 7-8 Reading

Congratulations to our March “Students of the Month”! They and their parents are invited to a special breakfast on May 2, 2012. These students are:

Parents, please follow the staff’s directions on the car line. We ask that everyone pull all the way up to allow as many cars to pull in as possible; it’s difficult if you stop suddenly and let your child out in order to turn left down Alhambra. It also slows down arrival and dismissal, and in the morning actually causes people to be late.

For your planning…

Thank you in advance for your donations.

We are continuing our “Pizza Party Promotion” for this year!  This will run through February 17th, 2012.  Here’s how it works… Any PBMA student who recommends another student to our school and that student is accepted, enrolls and attends PBMA through February 17th of this school year will win a Pizza Party for his/her entire class!  (The Pizza Party is for the class of the child who recommends the new student, not for the new student’s class.)  When the new student’s parent submits the application, please have him/her write the name of the recommending student on the first page of the application so we can give the proper credit.  If there is more than one PBMA student in the “recommending” family, it will be up to the family to decide which child’s class will get the Party.

Please check our website for the “FCAT Question of the Day”.  Questions, answers and explanations are available on the site, so please check these out with your children.  It’s a great way to spend time together, have fun, and prepare for this important test.  The questions are from the Department of Education website’s “FCAT Released Tests”, from the FCAT Item Specifications, or from our staff.  A different grade level and subject is featured each day.  Try the ones for your child’s grade, and for a challenge, try higher grade level questions!  The address is www.palmbeachmaritimeacademy.org.

Please find our Reading Connection handout this week; the activities are fun and geared towards helping parents help their children. You will also find a lunch menu and information on the School District’s Parental Involvement Policy/Plan Summary. Please call the number listed with any questions.

Wednesday April 25th                    Grade 5 Science (2nd section)

The Florida Legislature did pass the new FCAT “cut scores”, and last week I sent home a letter from the District explaining this.  In a nutshell, in order to be proficient, students now have to attain a higher score than they did in the Fall.  Parents in Grades 3-5 have received their child’s Winter Diagnostic score; we will send home scores for students in Grades 6-8 when they arrive.  Given the new scores, we will have to work much harder and thank you for your anticipated support!

Report Cards went home for Grades 6-8 on January 24th.  Please look for these and discuss them with your child.  If you have any questions, please call the appropriate teacher.

We are anticipating having a 9th Grade at the Lantana site next year.  If you wish to apply, please come to the current school on Dixie to pick up an application or go to our website at www.palmbeachmaritimeacademy.org.  We will give current students the opportunity to secure a spot before opening enrollment to the general public.  Completed applications must be returned to the current school by February 3rd, 2012.  After that, applications will be available to the general public, and qualified student will be accepted on a first-come, first served basis.

The 6th grade is now partnering with the National Junior Honor Society to collect bags of black beans and rice.  These donations will help local food banks, many of which are running out of food.  If you can help; please do.

On Saturday, February 18th from 10am-noon, Parenting Plus Magazine will be hosting an event at our new Lantana site.  There will be activities for the children including rock climbing, face painting, etc., and information for parents about the school.  Please join us for a fun-filled and informative morning!

The Palm Beach Maritime Museum is presenting free monthly “Concerts in the Park”.  Please see our website for more information.

Yesterday we sent home a School Effectiveness Questionnaire.  Please fill it out and return it to school by February 6th, 2012.  If you need a survey in Spanish or Haitian-Creole, please contact Dorey Spero.

Yearbook ad flyers went home several weeks ago.  This is a great way to congratulate your child’s accomplishments or advertise your business.  If you misplaced it or need more, please check our website or call the school.  Please take out your ad as soon as possible since they have to go to the printer by February.

Congratulations to our January Students of the Month.  They and their parents will be treated to a special breakfast on February 8, 2012 at 8:45am.  These students are:

KG Mishica                          Elias Thompson                 KG Hochenbaum              Haila Acanda
