Does Your Child Feel Safe at School?

Real safety is more than a locked door. It is a child who feels calm, known, and comfortable enough to be themselves. At Palm Beach Maritime Academy, a K-12 public charter school with campuses across Palm Beach County, we build that kind of emotional safety right alongside our physical security systems.

How Do PBIS and MTSS Create a Positive Campus Culture?

We use a structured framework called PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, alongside MTSS, or Multi-Tiered System of Supports. Together, these give every student clear expectations and a plan for extra help before small problems turn into big ones.

Here is how that plays out day to day:

Support Level What It Looks Like at PBMA
Whole School Clear, consistent behavior expectations taught to every student
Small Group Targeted check-ins for students who need extra structure or skill-building
Individual One-on-one support from counselors or staff for a specific student's needs

How Do Counselors and Open Doors Support Student Wellbeing?

Full-time licensed mental health counselors are on staff at both of our campuses. But the support does not stop there.

Our principals talk to students directly, every day, not just when something goes wrong. Their doors stay open for any student who wants to stop in, whether they want to share good news, ask for advice, or just be heard. For many of our scholars, school is one of the most steady, welcoming parts of their week, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Here is how we build that consistency into every school day:

  • Counselors who know students by name
  • Weekly school-based team meetings to catch concerns early and celebrate progress
  • Principals who are present and accessible, not behind a closed door
  • Character recognition built into the school year, so good choices get noticed too

Why Does Everybody Knowing Your Name Matter for School Safety?

Ask a PBMA family what they notice first, and many describe a caring kind of culture. Staff greet students by name. Teachers notice when a normally talkative kid goes quiet. That kind of attention is only possible because of how our classrooms are structured, and is not something a security camera can replace. It comes from having enough adults, paying close enough attention, over enough time.

If Recent Headlines Have You Reconsidering Your Options

If recent news from other schools in the area has you reconsidering where your child spends their day, you are not alone, and you are not overreacting. Emotional safety is not a soft add-on. It shapes whether a student can focus, take risks in learning, and ask for help when they need it.

We would rather show you than tell you. Schedule a tour and see our campus culture firsthand, or enroll for the 2026-27 school year if you are ready to make the move. You can also read more about our full range of support services for students and families.
